I’m enjoying a café au lait at one of my favorite old NYC haunts, French Roast. I used to practically live here and it’s odd to return to a place that used to be part of your daily life to see that the personnel has changed, the menu is different and the salad dressing isn’t quite as lemony. I’d feel like a stranger but for one thing: the door to the bathroom still sticks. I feel satisfaction watching person after person push on the door, think it’s locked and then wait their turn for it to become available even though it’s empty. They’ll figure it out just like I once did and then they can return here in a few years and sit smugly on the banquette just like I’m doing right now.
